Puri Agung Jero Kuta is Bali’s most magnificently-Majapahit palace. The Penyiraman body-washing ceremonies took place in the leafy ceremonial court: the northern pavilion was packed with pedandas and princes; handsome Denpasar palace wargi and banjar members in solemn Solonese colours filled the garden court. The deceased—the popular ‘Prince of Uluwatu’ A. A. Ngurah Winaya—was much respected in the adat community, so all the Brahman factions were represented. As the evening sun illuminated the hundreds of birdnest ferns—strung off the pavilion eaves and in the courtyard frangipani like chandeliers—a small band of palace princes sang kidung hymns. Coffee was served to all the afternoons survivors in high pavilion perches. The atmosphere was beautific, calme et voluptée.
