Last night Turah Kingson, the head of the Puri Grenceng palace in Denpasar, traditional owners of the temple's land, arrived just before the show hit the road. In days of yore his great grandfather used to ride a water buffalo to the PEMAPAGAN festival, through ten miles of rice fields, and sit on the pedati carriage, with the god RATU AGUNG strapped to the yoke, for the journey back to pura Dalem Kepala (son of Ratu Agung, who is son of Batara Sakenan). Last night Turah introduced me to the spicy sea snails called batu which are only sold at PAMAPAGAN. "if its not pemapagan, the snails don't appear"said the vendeuse.
