Hugo lays in state in an elegant timber coffin flanked by banks of white orchids and other white flowers. Two ceremonies were held—a catholic and then a Balinese (Raja Amir’s priest officiating with many Balinese in attendance including Pak Dewa, Hugo’s old driver of many years, and Jojol the sculptor, and Pierre’s Nyoman and Putu Suarsa. People then mingled for an hour in the garden as Arief wept intermittently on a bench by the pool, comforted by his handsome new wife, Jo. Coffee and tea were served by Café Batujimbar and Tanjung Sari staff. Tati and Amir and Alfrenyo were hosts. Mourners included Idanna Pucci and Terrence, and Gabriella and Sarita and kids and Linda and Jane and Lawrence and all the hill tribe grandees were there. It was very very lovely ........ another lost friend, another tribal re-union.
At 3 p.m. Arief leads the procession to the ambulance, on time, and carrying my photo of Hugo, signed A/P (tee hee) and the convoy is now on its way to the bukit. Yippy-yai-yoo.
